Saudi Building Code (SBC) Rules for Outdoor Shading Structures

The Saudi Building Code (SBC) and Riyadh Municipality regulations enforce clear specifications for exterior carports to guarantee structural integrity and prevent roadway obstructions.

1. Minimum Clearance Height

Regulations mandate that the lowest point of an exterior carport must maintain at least 2.5 meters of clear vertical clearance to permit unobstructed passage for emergency and municipal vehicles.

2. Wall-Mounted Cantilevers vs. Street Columns

Planting steel posts directly into public asphalt or street sidewalks is strictly prohibited. Awnings must be engineered as cantilevered structures mounted directly on the villa boundary wall with certified anchor brackets.

3. Wind Load and Fire Safety Standards

Awnings must be structurally calculated to withstand wind velocities of at least 120 km/h in accordance with SBC 301, with certified flame-retardant fabric classifications.
